Behind the Song – DaeShawn Forrest – ‘Too Long’
Christian Emcee DaeShawn Forrest’s new song ‘Too Long’ inspires me to step out on faith. Song comes from his timeless, timely “State of Mind” set of 2018.

DAESHAWN FORREST
DaeShawn Forest is from Antioch, California, and he creates music that encourages our steps toward the forgiving, empowering, and enlightening God. Forrest, like many of us in our youth, had trouble listening to God’s will, but as he continued taking serious strides towards God, his lessons began blessing with insight and courage.
‘Too Long’ is definitely hot hip-hop. DaeShawn Forrest writes lyrics that pay homage to the will of God. He’s unashamed of where he comes from, because he knows that God is guiding him now. He creatively covers his personal struggles, sharing how persistence & praise have inspired the redirection of his attention & actions. Song is a true testimonial, and it gives rise to any dormant dreamer.
SONGWRITING IS SUBJECTIVE
Hearing Forrest flow about his personal struggles, and God’s ability to give insight & integrity, is soothing to the seeking soul. According to Forrest, ‘Too Long’ refers to the sense of urgency God kept placing on him during his time of indecision. When we doubt our own abilities, settling for situations that don’t truly serve us, it’s easy to miss out on God’s gift of abundance. With this new song, Forrest let’s us know that faith walking is indeed a lifelong journey.
Just like many of the greats, God bestowed a precious gift for music-making on DaeShawn Forrest, and the longer he took to believe in himself, the more God spoke through life’s challenges to get his attention. To ultimately guide him to the fulfillment of his purpose of spreading the gospel through music.
One standout lyric in ‘Too Long,’ is “look back with laughter, now it don’t matter.” It comes in verse two.
I appreciate the lyric because in life’s many moments of rising negative or ambiguous emotions, it’s not always easy to faith and fall back. But, Forrest’s lyrics here speak on the strength of spirit to overcome obstacles, and move on with good intentions & unshakable faith.
Another remarkable lyric is the B-section:
“Can’t be waiting too long, knowing time don’t wait / God been too good, for me to play these games.”
Forrest finds himself expressing just how he has been in his own way; but now that he’s stepped out on faith, God‘s been directing the play.
RECOMMENDATION
I highly recommend ‘Too Long,’ especially if you want to hear from someone who has overcome tears & turbulence, and has gone onto shine in God’s good name. I also highly recommend this song because it illustrates how it’s never too early, or too late, to give your life over to God.
DaeShawn Forrest is a blessing not only to people of faith, but also to those uncertain of the faith journey. When you listen to ‘Too Long,’ you’ll find a young man determined to glorify God’s name. You’ll find faith is not hard to do, it is only a decision. And, once that decision is irrevocably made, God’s blessing business will include you and your wildest imagination.
